Fine Gael has announced the names of the members of their delegation to the Government’s Constitutional Convention.

The delegation is chaired by Laois/Offaly TD Charles Flanagan.

The rest of the delegation are; James Bannon TD, Jerry Buttimer TD, Regina Doherty TD, Minister Frances Fitzgerald TD, Terence Flanagan TD, Tom Hayes TD, Derek Keating TD, Tony McLoughlin TD, Michelle Mulherin TD, Senator Catherine Noone, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD.

In a statement, the party also said that in view of “the workload and range of issues to be considered by the Convention, Fine Gael’s contribution to its work will be rotated between the full and alternate members of the delegation”.

The alternates are: Senator Colm Burke, Senator Paul Bradford, Senator Jim D’Arcy, Pat Deering TD, Alan Farrell TD, Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, Sean Kyne TD, Joe O’Reilly TD.

The Convention, which is set to examine a number of controversial issues, including same-sex marriage, is set to meet for the first time next month.

Some 66 of the 99 delegates to the Convention will be “citizen members” and they have been chosen by a professional polling company from data contained on the electoral register.

The remaining 33 delegates will comprise politicians from the Oireachtas and the Northern Ireland Assembly. One representative of each Northern party will sit on the Convention with the Oireachtas representation reflecting party strength.

At the outset, proposals to reduce the President’s term of office from seven to five years, and a proposal to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 will be discussed by the convention.

According to the Programme for Government, the Convention is set to look at proposals to legalise same-sex marriage, remove the clause which refers to women in the home and remove the offence of blasphemy, among others.
