A significant majority of people believe that being raised by a mother and a father is the best family situation for children to grow up in, even as support for same-sex marriage remains high, according to a new Irish Times/IPSOS MRBI Poll.

In response to the question “Which (of the following parenting combinations) are capable of fully meeting a child’s needs?”, 67% said a father and mother were “extremely capable”, 28% said they were “very capable”. 3% said “fairly capable”, 1% said “not very capable” and another 1% said “not at all capable.”

Single fathers received a 21% “extremely capable” rating, 40% “very capable”, 31% “fairly capable”, 6% “not very capable” and 2% “not at all capable.”Single mothers were next in the ranking, though substantially below the mother-father combination. 27% said that a family with only a mother was “extremely capable” of meeting a child’s needs, and 44% saying “very capable.” 24% opted for “fairly capable”, 3% for “not very capable”, and 1% for “not at all capable.”

A household with two fathers was judged by 23% to be “extremely capable”, 27% to be “very capable”, 26% “fairly capable”, 15% “not very capable” and 8% “not at all capable.

Asked about a mother-mother combination, 27% said it would be “extremely capable” of fully meeting a child’s needs. 33% said it would be “very capable” 23% said “fairly capable”, 11% said “not very capable”, and 6% said “not at all capable”.

On the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum, 67% said they would vote Yes, 21% No, and 12% were undecided.
