Two-thirds of women with young children would rather stay at home

More than two-thirds of women say if they had young
children they would prefer to stay at home with them rather motherthan go out to work
according to a new opinion poll.

The survey of 922 women, commissioned by The Sunday Times,
asked respondents: ‘If you had young children and were in a financial position
to choose, would you rather stay at home to bring up the children or go out to
work?’

Sixty-nine percent of women said they would prefer to stay
at home, 23 percent said they would prefer to go to work, and eight percent
said they didn’t know.

In addition, the poll found that 64 percent of women would
like to marry a man who earns more than them. Zero percent said they wanted to
marry a man who earned less.

Sixty-two percent of married women have actually married
someone who earns more than them.

Nineteen percent of women said they wanted to marry a man
who is better educated than them, and the same percentage of women achieved
this aim.

Again, zero percent of women said they wanted to marry a man
who was more poorly educated, but 31 percent of married women said their
husbands were actually more poorly educated.

Finally, when asked, ‘Do you feel society pressurises women
with children to go out to work or stay at home’, 59 percent said ‘go to work’
and only 6 percent said ‘stay at home’.
