THE Iona Institute is co-sponsoring a major conference to coincide with
Ireland’s presidency of the European Union. It takes place on May 10, with a
‘curtain-raiser’ event on May 9.

The conference will look at the many crises currently facing Europe, whether
economic, political, social, religious or environmental. It will look at
Christian responses to each of these challenges.

The main organiser of the event is the Schuman Centre for European Studies,
based in the Netherlands.

Every year the Schuman Centre organises a conference aimed at advancing EU
founding father Robert Schuman’s vision of a Europe rooted in Christian values.
The conference is held in the capital of whichever country holds the EU
presidency at that time.

Public lecture – May 9 –
Christ Church Cathedral

There is a curtain-raiser for the conference proper on the evening of Thursday,
May 9 in Christ Church cathedral beginning at 7.30pm. Talks will be given by
former Taoiseach, John
Bruton, and renowned Christian speaker and author, Os Guinness.

Admission to this event is free. It will be chaired by David Quinn.

Conference – Europe in
Crisis – May 10 – Croke Park Conference Centre

The conference itself takes place the next day, Friday, May 10, in the Croke
Park Conference Centre. It starts at 9am and ends that night with two more
public lectures which begin at 7.30pm with drinks, also in the conference
centre.

The conference fee is €95
per head and includes lunch and dinner. To attend it will be necessary to
register in advance.

The conference will bring together an array of speakers who will share with
delegates some of the best Christian thinking today on the challenges faced by
Europe.

The public lectures that
night will be delivered by two of Europe’s most original
thinkers, Czech economist and author of ‘The Economics of Good and Evil’, Tomas
Sedlacek, and Michael Schulter of the Relationship Foundation in the UK.

The cost of attending the
public lectures is included in the conference fee. However, non-delegates can
also attend these for a fee to be paid at the door of €10 per head.
