THE recent Prime Time documentary revealing disturbing mistreatment of children in some of the country’s crèches has focused national attention once again on the very important issue of child-care.

Our next half-day conference will ask, among other questions:

Is day-time home-care best for young children, or crèches, or a combination of both?

What do parents really want?

Should Child Benefit be reduced so as to pay for better crèches or is it better left as it is?

How good is the Swedish model of day-care which some people say Ireland should emulate?

The speakers examining these important questions will be Victoria White, author of ‘Mother Ireland: why Ireland hates motherhood’; Toby Wolfe, Acting Director of Start Strong; Jonas Himmelstrand, author and critic of the Swedish day-care system; and Professor Noirin Hayes, lecturer in Child Development, Early Education and Learning Theory at Dublin Institute of Technology.

The format on the day will allow plenty of time for questions and discussion.

The Chair will be Gerard O’Neill of Amarach Research.
