Delete male and female references from official forms, MPs suggest

Changes to official forms to remove the words ‘male’ and ‘female’ and giving children hormone blocking drugs to delay puberty if they voice doubts about their gender identity are among the suggestions of a group of British MPsin a new report.

The report details ways in which it believes transgender people can be made to feel more included in British society, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Among other recommendations, the committee is calling for a simplifying of the process by which a transgender person can be legally recognised as such. Under the current Gender Recognition Act, people in Britain must live under their preferred gender for two years before gaining an official certificate. The committee suggests this can be simplified to a ‘self-declaration’ without the need to wait.

The committee further revealed that it found the use of different school uniforms for boys and girls and separation in such areas as lavatories to be potentially “problematic for the gender-varied pupil”.

While not making any recommendations on these issues, the committee’s report argues more broadly that the terms ‘male’ and ‘female’ should be omitted from official forms and government documents. Also, the committee calls for the inclusion of a gender ‘X’ option on British passports for those who do not wish to identify as either male or female.

“The Government should be moving towards ‘non-gendering’ official records as a general principle and only recording gender where it is a relevant piece of information,” the committee insisted. “Where information on gender is required for monitoring purposes, it should be recorded separately from individuals’ personal records and only subject to the consent of those concerned.”
