Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, recently serialised by the BBC, portrays Saints Thomas More and John Fisher in a less than flattering light. Indeed, in its depiction of Thomas More it might be said that Wolf Hall is the polar opposite of A Man for All Seasons.

Next Monday in Queen’s University, Belfast, Dr Richard Rex, an expect in Reformation history, will examine Mantel’s portrayal of these two saints. He will ask, was it fair?

The chair for the evening will be John Larkin, the Attorney General of Northern Ireland.

Iona Institute Director, David Quinn, will offer a vote of thanks at the end of the evening.

Dr Rex was educated at Westminster Cathedral Choir School, Warwick School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He worked as a civil servant in HM Treasury for 2 years before returning to Cambridge to research the theology of St John Fisher under Fr Brendan Bradshaw. He was a research fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge from 1988 to 1992. After several years on the staff of Cambridge University Library he became a lecturer in Church History in the Divinity Faculty in 1995 and is now a Reader in reformation History. He has been a fellow of Queens’s College since 1995.
