These are testing times for the Catholic Church in Ireland. Falling Mass attendances reflect increasing disenchantment with the institutional church, and a widespread perception that it is out of touch, and unresponsive.
There’s a growing consensus within the church that change is overdue. But the form change should take remains a matter for debate.
Renewal of the Irish church is the subject of a talk this evening by George Weigel, author of a best-selling biography of Pope John 2, and one of the leading Catholic intellectuals in the United States.
George joined Pat in studio to discuss the magnitude of the challenges facing the Irish church. Also in studio was Gina Menzies, a theologian and lecturer in medical ethics.
