New figures show that 85pc of Irish women who went to England for abortions in 2012 were single and 15pc were married.
This confirms that single women are far more
likely to have abortions than married women.
The new
data for 2012 also breaks down by region the number of Irish women who travelled
to England for abortions. For example, 1.275 were from Dublin, 120 were from Kildare, and 28 were from
Roscommon.
In 2012, of the 3,982 Irish residents who had an abortion in
England and Wales,
3,013 were single, while were
under the age of 20.
75pc of Irish residents who had abortions in
England or Wales were “White Irish”, 6.5pc or 258 women were “White Other”, 203
were “White British”. 76 were listed like “Black” and 57 like “Asian”.
The statistics show that 68pc of Irish women had an abortion
in the first nine weeks of pregnancy, 17pc
at between 10 and 12 weeks gestation, 12 pc at between 13 and 19 weeks and 2.5 percent at 20+ weeks.
In Britain
there are approximately 200,000 abortions each year. This amount to 22pc of
live births. The equivalent Irish figure is 6pc.
In England and Wales, 81pc of abortions are performed on single women. In 2002, the figure was 75pc.
